The New Zealand Society for Mountain Medicine (NZSFMM) is a non-profit organisation bringing together all those who practice or have an interest in providing healthcare within challenging outdoors terrain, in Aotearoa – New Zealand. We welcome into our community everyone regardless of their medical and outdoors skills. NZSFMM is a space for discussion, education, knowledge sharing and support.
Our mission is to advocate and support the development of mountain medicine in Aotearoa New Zealand to improve national capability to access, treat and evacuate casualties in the mountain environment.
The Society was formed in 2020. If you are interested in medicine in the outdoors, in particular in the mountains and broadly understood wilderness areas, get in touch.
NZSFMM is rebranding to Outdoor Medicine New Zealand (OMNZ). This is to align us with the multiple environments that we operate in within New Zealand – and while alpine may remain our largest support base we wanted to be appealing to those in the bush, tropical, offshore and other areas.
Note: In 2023 the Society ran an Elective Course in Mountain Medicine for final year medical students. We have since received many inquires about future courses. At the moment, no future electives are planned by the society.
